Radio Activity isn't the problem, as they didn't actually drop any live NUCLEAR bombs on the site - it's too close to civilisation...that'd be stupid. They did explode many other bombs, however and as most of the paths on the ness indicate it is actually due to burried and unexploded ordinance, that certain places are out of bounds.
